"Have nothing in your home except what you believe to be beautiful or know to be useful".

- William Morris

B.C. (Before Christmas)

  • Clear out those broken or outgrown toys and clothes and recycle them if possible.
  • Make space by removing clutter and brighten rooms in preparation for the winter celebrations.

New year

  • Time to find homes for those unwanted Christmas gifts and if not recycle them.
  • New Year: New Beginnings.

Spring cleaning

  • Have a mini house clearance as you clean each room.
  • New growth is in the air - a new outlook.

Handy clearing tips

  • Set boundaries: Use the 1 in 1 out rule: if your bookshelf is full, get rid of one book before buying another.
  • Only handle items once.
  • Reduce the number of times jobs are done: Multi-task, create a routine.
  • Choose what to do with items: Keep (where? - preferably where it's most needed and accessible). OR Sell (advertise in local shop, newspaper, Admag, on eBay or at a local auction).
  • For Car Boot Sale: Designate space in your loft, garage or an out- of- the- way area until there is enough to sell or you are ready.
  • For Charity Shop: Bag up, label and take the next time you pass one.
  • For Recycling: Create a system of boxes for specific items i.e. glass, paper, tins etc.
  • Pass items on to a friend or relative: "One person's rubbish is another person's treasure".
  • Rationalise: Designate specific areas for certain items where they will be most useful and accessible.
  • Do a little at a time: Tackle what you feel comfortable with i.e. cupboard, room or garage.
  • Get help! Have friends round and get them to clear that clutter - they may take some away for you...
  • Bring balance to your life: Clear out, relax, start a regular physical activity and socialise.
  • Don't put off 'till tomorrow what can be done today...
